How Many Months Can You Get Paid UIF?

By | August 4, 2025

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) in South Africa offers temporary financial support to workers who lose their jobs through retrenchment, dismissal, or company closure. The length of UIF payments depends on how long you were employed before losing your job and the reason for your job loss.

UIF Payment Duration Based on Job Loss Type

  • Retrenchment or Company Closure
If you were retrenched or your employer’s business shut down, you qualify for UIF payments for up to 12 months. This means you can receive monthly UIF benefits for a full year following your job loss. Keep in mind, once you find a new job during this period, your UIF payments will stop.
  • Dismissal
If you were dismissed from your job, UIF payments are available for up to six months. Should you successfully dispute the dismissal and return to work, the UIF payments will be terminated.

Important Notes About UIF Payments

  • The monthly UIF amount depends on your previous salary, capped at a maximum of R17,712 per month.
  • To qualify for UIF benefits, you must have contributed to the fund for at least 13 consecutive weeks before losing your job.
