Since October 1, 2020, vehicle owners in South Africa receive their Motor Vehicle Licence Renewal (MVL2) notifications via SMS or email. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) no longer sends these renewal notices by post.
What to Do If You Don’t Receive Your Renewal Notification
If you haven’t received your MVL2 renewal notice electronically, you can download it directly from the official NaTIS website:
- Visit: online.natis.gov.za
- Or use the RTMC Android Mobile App available for download on the Google Play Store.
How to Keep Your Contact Details Up to Date
To make sure you receive renewal notifications on time:
- Update your mobile phone number and email address on the NaTIS system.
- You can do this by:
- Visiting your nearest traffic office
- Registering or updating your profile on the NaTIS website
- Using the RTMC Android Mobile App
What You Need to Renew Your Vehicle Licence Disc
When renewing your vehicle licence disc, bring:
- The MVL2 SMS or email notification
- Your South African ID document (ID)
If you send someone else to renew your vehicle licence on your behalf, they must bring:
- A signed letter of permission stating full names and ID numbers of both you (the owner) and the representative
- A certified copy of your ID
- The representative’s ID

How to Download Your Vehicle Licence Renewal Notice Online
- Go to online.natis.gov.za
- Click on “My Profile” and register as follows:
- Select Individual
- Enter your ID number
- Enter your surname and initials exactly as on your driving licence card
- Enter your driving licence card number
- Enter your email address and cell phone number
- Submit your details and enter the One-Time Pin (OTP) sent to your phone/email to complete registration
- After successful registration, click on “View Motor Vehicle Renewals”
- Choose Individual and enter your ID number, surname, and initials again
- Enter the OTP when prompted
- Your vehicle(s) due for renewal will be displayed
- If your vehicle licence has already expired, no information will be shown
- Click Download to save and print your renewal notice
- Use this electronic notice with the unique reference number when renewing your vehicle licence
