What Documents Do You Need to Renew Your Driver’s License in South Africa?

By | July 19, 2025

Renewing your South African driver’s license requires a few essential documents and items. It’s important to go prepared to avoid delays or repeat visits to the licensing centre.

Required Documents and Items:

  1. Original South African ID
    • Bring your green barcoded ID, Smart ID card, or a valid passport.
    • Note: Some centres like Edenvale (Johannesburg) may require an A4 copy of your ID.
  2. Proof of Residential Address
    • This should be a document not older than 3 months showing your name and address. Accepted documents include:
      • Utility bill
      • Bank statement
      • Municipal account
  3. Current or Expired Driver’s License
    • Bring your physical license card. If it’s already expired, you may apply for a temporary driver’s license.
  4. Temporary License (Optional)
    • If your license has expired, request a temporary license at the cashier.
    • Fee: ±R90 (cash only)
    • Photos Required: 1 or 2 black and white ID photos, depending on the testing centre. Some allow colour.
  5. ID Photos
    • Optional but recommended. Some centres require:
      • Randburg: 2 black & white photos
      • Johannesburg: 1 photo (colour or black & white)
      • Vanderbijlpark: 1 colour photo
    • Most testing centres have photo booths (±R50 for a set of 4 photos).
  6. Prescription Glasses or Contact Lenses
    • Bring them along if you need them for driving. A basic eye test is part of the renewal process.
  7. A Black Pen
    • Always bring your own. Many testing centres do not provide pens.
  8. Completed DL1 Application Form
    • The DL1 (green form) is used to apply for a license renewal.
    • Fill in Sections A, B, and D.
    • Available at:
      • Your nearest driving licence testing centre (DLTC)
      • Online via the eNatis website
    • Note: Some centres only accept double-sided A3 versions printed to their specifications. Others, like Marlboro, only accept in-person forms.

Special Note for Gauteng Residents:

If you’re based in Gauteng, you must book online in advance:

  • Use the official NATIS Booking System: https://online.natis.gov.za
  • This system is currently only for Gauteng RTMC centres, but may be expanded nationwide in the future.

Final Tips:

  • Arrive early ; queues can be long, especially at busy centres.
  • Make sure all documents are complete, valid, and legible.
  • Keep extra copies of your ID and proof of residence, just in case.

By being prepared with the correct documents and understanding the requirements of your local licensing centre, you can ensure a smoother and faster license renewal process.
